Perfect Sweet Potato Fries (2 ways)

Fries are so easy to make at home, and they are significantly cheaper as well. I also love that when you make them at home you can adjust the flavors and get them a little bit sweet, or savory. These are great for kids lunches too! I understand that busy families may not have time to slice, soak, and cook a French Fry - after all you would still need to make the rest of the meal as well! So here is one of the only fry brands I have found that I think is made from quality ingredients: Jesse and Bens fries.

So in this home we use sweet potato for a lot of things! They are a cooking dream, you can bake, broil, sauté, steam, and pretty much do anything with them! Did I mention my toddler loves them, and they are perfect for Baby Led Weaning? You can add all sorts of different flavors and textures which is great when going through that picky toddler phase. Not only that they are a great source of carbs, and cheap, for my husband who eats so much food.

There are 2 important parts of cooking sweet potato fries. First you have to soak them in a big pot of water, this is the secret to getting a crunchy baked fry! Next you make sure they don’t touch on the pan. Anywhere they are touching will end up soggy, and turn into mashed sweet potatoes- which is just as good. And the greatest thing is that if your fries get a tad burnt on the edges, that is a delicious sugar crystallization that will be super flavorful bite! Although, I definitely wouldn’t recommend burning the whole fry as that would be…burnt. So for this recipe I am going to show 2 ways to make the Perfect Sweet or Savory Sweet Potato Fry!

Savory Sweet Potato Fries

Prep Time: 10 minutes

Cook Time: 45 minutes

Total Time: 55 minutes

Servings: 4

Ingredients

  • 2 Sweet Potatoes

  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil or Tallow

  • Parsley

  • 1 tsp garlic powder

  • 1 tsp onion powder

  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 425 degrees.

  2. Slice you sweet potatoes into thin sticks, trying to make them as uniform as possible so they cook evenly.

  3. Soak them in a big bowl of water so they are totally covered, do this for around 5 minutes. (Not neccesary but makes them crunchier)

  4. Take them out and dry them with a hand towel. Place them in a bowl and coat them with oil, then split them between 2 baking sheets, making sure they aren’t touching.

  5. Sprinkle the spices, and salt and pepper on them and bake them for 45 minutes. Flip them halfway to ensure even baking. For busy folks, if you don’t do this, they will taste great just might have one side that isn’t as crunchy.

  6. When they come out of the oven, let them cool to touch. Then sprinkle with a bit of parsley for an added boost of vitamins.
